Beginning Week 17, Beginning Month 5

As my abdomen continues to grow, it will begin moving other organs around to compensate for the growth of the uterus and baby. (I think this is so strange.) The top of the uterus is beginning to appear more rounded and is lengthening. It is starting to push my intestines up and out towards the side of my abdomen. It's amazing what the body does!

Baby is about 5-6 inches long now. Baby's umbilical cord is not only lengthening but also becoming thicker and stronger for these last 23 weeks. Baby’s sense of hearing is also developing since the ears have fully formed. Baby is also beginning to form adipose or fat tissue. This will help baby take on a more normal appearance by filling out the fine features that baby has. Fat is important in helping regulate the body’s temperature and metabolism.

The circulatory system and urinary tract are functioning, and baby is inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid as baby learns to breathe.

I haven't felt any flutters yet, but I'm sure that point is just around the corner. The only other change I'm noticing is my sleeping pattern. It is totally out of wack and the warm weather (humidity) is really starting to bug me. I toss and turn at night, but luckily, Kevin sleeps pretty hard at night. I think once it cools down I might be able to get things under control.

I really enjoy reading your blogs!!! Are you going to find out if it is a boy or a girl? We did and at the end I was really nervous that she was going to come out a he!! How is your belly are you looking pregnant yet? It is kind of funny because I had nothing and then a little belly and then all of a sudden it was like where did this belly come from!!! It really is a lot of fun to be pregnant, I didn't have any morning sickness or no other problems during pregnancy so I was really lucky! To be honest, labor wasn't as hard and didn't hurt as much as I thought it was going to. I had a lot of back labor and that was very uncomfortable and a little painful but actually having her wasn't as bad as I thought. It really is an amazing thing!!! I don't know what you are thinking about for delivery but you should try the water birth...you can't get an epidural. I did the water birth and I really liked it...I felt really relaxed while I was having her!!! Granted I don't have anything to compare it to but hearing others stories and how much pain they were in or listening to how tired they were after. I know that we haven't talked in a while and mostly my fault, if you every want to talk about baby stuff, give me a call!! 410-3874!! I'm not an expert but I love to talk about baby stuff and I would love to catch up!! I wish all the best for you!!! Oh, are you taking lamaze? I didn't and honestly I'm glad because I wouldn't have remembered anything while I was in labor...I just read lots of book to get some information and went and looked up things up online. I just took the Waterbirth Class. The class that I would suggest to take if you are going to Nurse is a breastfeeding class...I wish I would have taken one because I nursed and things were going good until Ava got Thrush and then I just couldn't take the pain anymore...my nipples felt like they were on fire and maybe the class would have helped me...I had to stop breastfeeding.

We are not going to find out the sex of the baby. Want it to be a surprise. I will be taking the birthing class and the breastfeeding class. Kevin will come with to those as well. I'm also doing some reading and that is helpful as well.

I've also decided to do a regular birth, with the drugs. My mom-in-law is a delivery nurse so I get lots of good information from her.

The pregnancy is super so far. I finally have a little tummy and it will grow bigger quite soon. I'm happy to hear that everything went well with Ava. Sorry to hear you had to stop breastfeeding though. That part of the pregnancy/baby is really important to me.

Hope all is well at the Duran house.
