35 weeks and counting

Almost 35 weeks. Really, time is flying by! Today was another doctor appointment. I go back again in two weeks and start getting checked for dilation. I’ve gained a total of 26 pounds and my belly measures 37cm, which is 2cm larger than “normal” but nothing to be worried about. I believe I was two ahead with Charlotte too.
I think I’ve started nesting. All the newborn clothes are washed and put in the closet. I have the baby book ready and baby's first year calendar ready to go. I’ll probably start ordering some diapers soon too. Overall I feel good. Lower back has been better than it was. I carry a pillow with me everywhere. However, my xiphoid process has been killing me. It must really be sticking out. The only position that feels comfortable is extremely reclined or laying down. Both which are not convenient. If that’s the only thing I really have to complain about, I’m probably doing ok. Getting nervous on how I’ll know when baby is really coming, but I’m sure I’ll know!

Quilts of 2010

2010 Quilts

Watch out 2011, if I get a chance to quilt with two kids in the house...I'm gonna turn out some pretty awesome things!

Stars on Christmas Morning Quilt

You may have seen a few posts before regarding the sawtooth star quilt I was making for my mom. Now that Christmas is over, I can finally share the final product with you. The pattern is designed by Sew Mama Sew! Most of the prints are part of the Hoffman Holiday Renaissance and Holiday Cheer line.

This is by far the most difficult quilt I've made to date. All the small cuts really gave room for error. Trying to make sure all the lines and points matched up was hard. There was a lot of pressing involved and you know how much I love ironing.

After seeing these pillows at Pottery Barn I really wanted to have cardinal pillows for the couch at her house. She absolutely loves her birds and I knew she would go nuts for matching pillows. The PB ones were $40 each (cover alone!) and that was definitely outside my budget. This was an experiment for me. I made two envelope enclosure pillows using this tutorial and they turned out soooo great! I really impressed myself. They also look fantastic with the quilt.

when will baby arrive?

Yes, I started a baby pool. However, no money is involved, just some fun guessing. How good do you think you are at guessing baby's gender, date of birth, weight, etc? Here's a simple website I've set up to take your best bet!

Poll will close in about five weeks, the week before I'm due. Good luck!

Northwoods Christmas Quilt

Finally, Christmas is over and I can share my fantastic creations! Here's the quilt I made for my Mother-in-Law, Elaine. The pattern is a Moda Pattern from Amanda Jean of Crazymomquilts. The fabric is Northwoods Botanical by Holly Taylor for Moda.

I also made her a matching table topper for the coffee table in the living room. I really like how this turned out. The fabric choice was perfect.

next up

For those of you who follow, you might remember my vow to never again make a quilt I didn't absolutely love when completed. I'm making this promise for two reasons: (1) They are no fun to work on unless you love them and (2) They take too much time, effort and money to be something you aren't proud of.

With that being said, I found a new quilt I'm going to make. Although the quilt-along is over, I'm going to make Cara's (Me? A Mom?) Urban Lattice Quilt.

Inspiration

In an effort to still not make anything too girly, I found these four fabrics as part of Joel Dewberry's line Modern Meadow. The main solid color will be navy blue and the prints below will make up the scrap diamonds. So, stay tuned! I'm super excited to start cutting and sewing (pending my back...bending over the kitchen table is not ideal...)

Say No to the Mom Uniform

During my "lunch break" today (since I have no immediate quilting to work on), I thought I'd catch up reading some blogs I follow. I found some great insight on Heidi's blog: Honeybear Lane.

Going from chic and single to mom and married has been tough on my wardrobe, and therefore, my image. Sure it's nice to take time in the morning and have the choice of no makeup or not doing my hair, but sometimes I just look in the mirror and think geeze, I need a makeover.

The days of dressing up at work in cute clothes are definitely over. I miss Anthropologie very much. I can't fathom buying things from there anymore because nobody will even see me wear the stuff. Besides, I chase a toddler around and will soon be adding burp cloth to my accessory list.

I partially quote from Heidi's blog, "Now that I have a toddler and a baby-on-the-way, I have officially graduated to the place where style goes to die...the Mom Uniform.  You know it.  The boring Target shirt thrown with some jeans.  And just maybe that shirt is slightly stained.  And maybe you 'mix things up' by wearing some sort of sweater you bought for $120 that used to fit pre-baby.  At this time of year, shoes are my fleece lines "slippers".  Clothes have become a necessity, something to essentially cover up nakedness and a lumpy figure, as opposed to something that can boost your self-confidence.  When do we ever get time to shop for ourselves?  We think about the options...1) drag your kids to the store and either chase them around the store or strap them in a stroller where they whine the whole time while you try and find something quickly to make the whole experience over with or 2) Stay home.  Eat."

For 2011, I vow to actually look at myself in the mirror every now and then. I probably shouldn't grocery shop in pajamas when un-showered. Now, this doesn't mean I'm going to run out and purchase a new wardrobe (can't afford and won't fit anyways), but I am going to try and dress in a way that makes myself feel better about what I'm doing....being a Mom. Charlotte always looks cute, but I can't hardly remember the last time I looked cute. At least I have managed to keep up on my hair color...

So, to all you Moms out there, don't fall into the same trap that many of us have...the Mom Uniform. Give yourself some credit and dress to impress...YOURSELF that is!

33 weeks

33 weeks. The photo was from last week, so 32 weeks. Baby is approximately 16 ½ inches long and weighs between 4 ½ to 5 pounds. That's a little person! Baby’s skin is beginning to look less red and less wrinkled. Fat stores are continuing to be deposited under his/her skin. His/her bones are all beginning to harden except for the skull.

My appointment went really well. Gained five pounds (eeek!!) and have a nice BIG belly. Charlotte tagged along on this one and was awesome for me, despite the fact I just about dumped her out of the stroller on the way in. She's a trooper! The cold doesn't bug her a bit. She even keeps her gloves on for me.

I'm starting to lose my "baby nerves" and get excited for our new adventure. Seven weeks isn't that long and soon I'll be sleeping on the couch with the TV on and a bassinet in the living room. It's exciting!

advent calendar squares

I've started making an advent calendar for next year. After seeing adorable ones at Pottery Barn and The Land of Nod, I figured I could easily make one. So far, it's turning out really cute. I have a few more squares to make yet, then need to attach it to a back and have some embroidery done.

"slide again, daddy pull!"

"Slide again, Daddy pull!" These are the words out of Charlotte's mouth when she discovered how much fun sledding is. Especially when you get pulled UP the hill and don't have to walk.

With a few inches on the ground today, we bundled Charlotte up in her snowsuit and boots to see how she'd take to winter in Wisconsin. As expected, she loved the snow just like a true Wisconsinite. Another mom gave me a baby sled just last week and we sure got use out of it already. When we plopped Charlotte in the seat she knew right away what was going on. A little face spray down the hill didn't even bother her.

We also decorated sugar cookies today. Cookie decorating wasn't very high on her list. She had some interest but preferred dumping the sprinkles on the table. I was ok with the mess so that made the task a little easier to handle. Maybe next year she'll be into it a little more. Christmas sure is a lot more fun with a tot in the house. I can't wait until she truly understands Santa Clause. She recognizes him but we'll be starting that tradition next year.

Big girl bed update: Not so good. Today I took the crib mattress out and we said "bye, bye crib." Yep, come nap time Charlotte cried and cried when she was put into the big girl bed. I ended up putting the mattress back in the crib. I thought it a good idea to not force her into the big bed as I really don't want her to end up hating the bed. Hopefully she'll start liking it soon or we're gonna have a problem...

make your own tickle "lovie"

When I was a little girl I had a pink "tickle bunny" that I loved probably more than anything I owned. The problem is, I was a thumb sucker and eventually mom took it away. She said I could have it back when I was married...

The yellow bunny is what they look like. This is Charlotte's and his name is Rufus.
Fisher Price only made these for about 4 or 5 years. They run about $80-$100+ on eBay. Charlotte's is yellow because I made my mother replace the pink one when we could not locate the bunny in 2007 when I was married. Rufus has a special place in our hearts. Charlotte loves him more than anything and is usually seen tickling him around the house.

Unfortunately, he's not really replaceable without spending another fortune. We've found this to be troublesome when we've come close to losing him two or three times.

Most everybody knows I'm expecting and I came up with a fun project for myself. I decided to replicate Rufus by making a tickle bear for baby #2. Being a little smarter, I am making TWO of them, identical!

Here's the steps I've gone through and the final product. I am waiting to make the body of the bear until I know if we are having a boy or a girl. This way I can by more gender specific cuddle fleece.

I traced the head and made ears from the original bunny onto paper first.

Next I traced the pattern onto cream fleece and cut out ears, head and hands. Then I cut a piece of silk a little larger than the fleece piece to make the inside of the ears.

This was the hardest part. Take the 'outside' of the ear pattern (in fleece) and sew the silk ear piece to the fleece. You will need to cut the edges so you get it nice and round. Be sure to use a thinner needle with the silk fabric. This took me a couple tries to get right.

Final product should look something like this. The pink silk is the inside of the ear.

Lay the back fleece part of the ear, right sides together, on the newly made silk/fleece part of the ear and cut it out to have two matching ear pieces (for front and back).

Sew right sides together using a small stitch. Turn inside out and this should be the finished ear.

For the face parts I found some felted wool so everything remained soft. I also didn't want any parts that could fall off (like a button). I cut eyes, nose, pink cheeks and a white mouth piece. Identical sets. First I assembled the mouth and then the mouth onto the face. I used tight zig zag stitches and straight stitches. Click on the photo for a larger version. The brown mouth is a tight zig zag stitch.

Next be sure to place the ear correctly on the front of the face. Sew right sides together (head) and turn inside out. You have two identical heads!!

This is where I have to wait another 8 weeks to find out if we are having a boy or a girl. Then I can get some adorable fleece and assemble the body. (I already have the hands made.) This last part should be easy.

So if you are a die-hard tickle bunny fan since 1979, here's an easy way to replicate the Fisher Price bunny. I'm super excited with how it turned out. Charlotte even thinks she has "three" Rufus' now.

don't drink the water

Being a new mom is hard. Being a new mom with no mom friends is even harder. Being a new mom and the only one to have more than one kid is probably challenging too. Luckily, I'm not in that boat.

Whatever you do, don't drink the water in the Northshore area. Between the two groups of close mom friends I have, (2) have newborns and (6) of us are expecting our second baby. A personal friend of mine is  expecting and a co-worker is, for a total of (8). Wow! That's a lot of new babies! Here I was concerned that I'd be the only one among my friends to be carting around another kid. Well, I'm so happy to say I was wrong. It sure is a lot more fun to go through a pregnancy and the challenge of having a toddler and a newborn when your friends are in the same boat. Sympathy is needed and these are the right girlfriends to hand it over. Homemade meals for two weeks doesn't hurt either...

So, if you aren't looking to get pregnant, don't drink the water in the Northshore area or you are bound to end up on my list of pregnant friends!

my all-time favorite Christmas cookie

My all-time favorite Christmas cookie is from my Grandma's collection. Cherry cream cheese cookies. They are the best and worth the effort it takes to make them. Trust me, you've never had a cookie like this.

A gooey cherry-cream cheese filling sits atop a buttery sugar cookie. They are delectable and I can never stop eating them. They are so good that Kevin has taken them on as "his" favorite Christmas cookie too. They stick together so you have to put wax paper in between layers and keep them chilled, but I'm telling you, you need to try these!

Directions:

1 C powder sugar
2 tsp. vanilla

1 C butter
2 C flour

1 egg
Mix and refrigerate for 1-2 hours.
Heat oven to 350ยบ. Form into 1” balls and place 2” apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. With your thumb, make an imprint in each cookie. Bake for 10 -12 min. and cool completely.
Filling:
1 C powder sugar
2 Tbl. flour
3 oz. cream cheese
1 tsp. vanilla
½ C coconut
½ C chopped red maraschino cherries
Glaze:
¼ C semi-sweet chips
3 - 4 tsp water
1 Tbl. Butter
¼ C powder sugar
In saucepan over low heat, mix chips and butter. Remove from heat and add sugar and water to make glaze. Drizzle over filled cookies. Refrigerate between wax paper.

I really hope you make these. Enjoy!!

The Most Beautiful Gift: Never-Ending Love

'Tis the season to rejoice. I received this today and felt the need to share it.

Have you noticed how much effort some folks put into finding just the right Christmas gifts for their child? I bet you know someone who doesn't think twice about spending endless hours - or even days - scouring store shelves for that awesome action figure, digital doodad, or doll their child has been wanting.
Let's think about it. Is there anything wrong with this? What's the problem with spending lots of time and energy looking for neat and nifty Christmas gifts for our kids?
Nothing. But…
What happens when we exert more energy on finding these gifts than showing our youngsters what a gift they are to us? Don't forget the most perfect gift of all: the expression of never-ending, unconditional love.
We're all wired to need it. All of us yearn for a relationship with someone who will love us forever, regardless of how stinky we behave. Isn't this the greatest gift we can give our loved ones? Isn't this what Christmas is really about?
During this Christmas season, my hope is that you'll…
  • spend more time playing with your kids than you spend shopping for them;
  • remember that the gift they really yearn for is you;
  • hug them and smile into their eyes as often as possible; and
  • show them through your never-ending love what a precious gift they are.

there's a tree in my house

Last night we put up the Christmas Tree. Charlotte loves it. We stuck her on daddy's shoulder to help with the star. She help put a few ornaments on too. I think we are going to place them a little higher and forego the glass ones. Hopefully she won't pull it down. She did stick her fingers in the water already.

December 1st. Today marks Charlotte's 21-month birthday. She's really getting big. It's evident in her speech and the way she interacts with other kids when we are out playing. I still can't believe we'll have another one in just about 9 weeks.

I do see my doctor again today. I'm sure everything will be great. Charlotte will be coming to this appointment too. I'll give you an update later on.
