green life, green baby?

I think we've all encountered the 'green' fad in one way or another. As a wannabe treehuger, I often wonder if it's really a fad? I like to believe that people, at least my age, are actually becoming more environmentally conscience.

I have two books that have given me great ideas: A Slice of Organic Life and recently, Raising Baby Green. Both have proven to be exceptional books. Did you know that you can grow strawberries in a hanging basket? I can't wait to give it a show this summer-- mine were eaten by a Mr. Rabbit last year.

Now, some people, really take this organic lifestyle beyond what's normal. I like to think that my husband and I are just living a normal life. For example we take canvas bags to the grocery store, buy recycled TP, turn lights off, use fluorescent light bulbs, recycle, compost, wash clothes in cold water, have a rain barrel, grow our own veggies, joined a CSA farm share, buy local when possible, and (try) to live a simple life.

When we decided to start a family, I started thinking about baby and green. I think being responsible will automatically translate into a healthy baby. I already plan on making my own baby food, by freezing my farm share, and using cloth diapers on the newborn. Being green also includes things like knowing where your fish and beef come from, choosing organic milk, avoiding caffeine and reading labels. What's the harm!

For while now I've been subscribing to Green Bite, a green tip that can be emailed to you daily. http://www.idealbite.com/

I guess my point is that I don't think this green and/or organic lifestyle is really a fad. It might relax a little, but I really believe that consumers are becoming more conscious of their bodies. With all the freakin' diseases out there, why put pesticides in your body when you can opt to not have them? It's truly amazing what baking soda and vinegar can clean. Besides, with all the enviro friendly products, like Seventh Generation, out there, why not opt for something safer?

To wrap it up, we are definitely jumping in to the green movement and will continue to translate that to our baby someday. This place has to be around so generations and enjoy the beautiful land that God made.

perpetual over-planner

By now, I've definitely come to realize that I over plan just about everthing in my life. Perhaps that's also why I over anticipate just about everything too.

Within the last few months, Kevin and I have decided that it is time to start a family. (Extactly when it will begin is a little out of my control, but I can try to predict.) And it's precisely just that. As far as knowing that we'll never truly be ready for babies, I took a step and painted the guest bedroom. It was a terrible blue; the cream is much more inviting and I may add, gender neutral.

As you can tell, the walls are rather bare. I am saving that project for sometime this summer. We did, however, get new bedding and I made pillows and curtains in a chocolate brown silk. So far, the room is quite cozy. We still need a rug and some furniture. Then, it's a matter of seeing just how much furniture we can get in the room. The dresser will turn into a changing table, the desk is so I can work from home, and I think we'll try to squeeze in a mission style recliner as well. (The chair hasn't been bought yet, but I have my eyes on one.)

I know pre-planning and over-planning can take the fun out of it, but I still had a nice wedding! I don't recall losing any of the fun. The best part of all, I married somebody who over-plans just as much as I do. This way, I don't look like such a freak. When we think we are being judged, we just keep our traps shut.

Can't say just yet when we can shout, baby on board, but hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

you're a family when...

You know you are a family when somebody leaves and you actually miss them (despite loving the whole bed to yourself and the dog). Kevin went to Barrow, AK this weekend for four days. Griffin and I mostly chilled on the couch and definitely noticed it was a bit quite around the house. If you don't know where Barrow is, here!

I think this is one of the laziest weekends I've ever had. The tub is not going to get clean by itself, yet, I stil haven't scrubbed it. Too bad Griffin doesn't have thumbs.

Come home soon Kevin. You're family of almost a year misses you.
